Infineon Solar Pump Motor Drive Design Challenge 2021

The “Infineon Solar Pump Motor Drive Design Challenge 2021”, in collaboration with Startup India, invites the industry, SMEs and Startups to participate and compete for the best motor drive solution for solar pumps. The winners will get access to the fast growing Pump drive market for further development and manufacturing of their working solution or/and collaborate with a industry player / manufacturer to integrate their solution with an ongoing working pump project.

Infineon Solar Pump Motor Drive Design Challenge 2021

It is estimated that the production of pumps in India is presently of the order of ₹3,500 crores, (US$ 750 million), with over one million pumps produced every year. This creates a high volume local demand for drives for solar pumps and overall pump market for energy efficient operation.

India’s vibrant pump manufacturing industry is able to meet most of the domestic market demand. However, electronics is still in infancy for this industry and most manufacturers rely on overseas suppliers for drives. This results in high forex outgo, non-build-up of local competence and weak supply chain. India has the potential to become a global lead in the solar pump industry once a complete ecosystem is in place.

Infineon Technologies, a world leader in semiconductors, launched its ‘Infineon Solar Pump Motor Drive Challenge 2021' initiative to encourage affordable and reliable solar powered irrigation systems for farmers – design and manufactured locally. Organized in collaboration with Startup India, AGNIi - housed under Invest India, and in partnership with Avnet, the program seeks the best design in motor drive solution for solar pumps.

This Challenge is open to Individuals, Startups, SMEs who are keen in designing innovative solutions for Motor drives for Solar Pump.

Why Solar Pumps will make a difference?

Solar-powered pumps run on power generated by photovoltaic panels replacing grid- or diesel-run generators. This alleviates the pressure on weak rural grids and eliminates pollution from diesel-operated pumps.

In developing nations like India, the agriculture sector offers a substantial opportunity for the growth of the solar water pump market. India is endowed with solar irradiation to facilitate a booming solar pump ecosystem. A great boon for the environment, enablement of solar pumps across the country will reduce need for heavier investment in grid infrastructure, improve farmers’ livelihood and decrease reliance on imported crude.

Government of India focus on Solar with Project KUSUM

India’s Union Budget 2020 has laid a major emphasis on use of solar energy for farming under the ambitious Pradhan Mantri-Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthan (PM-KUSUM) scheme, with an outlay of ₹34,422 crores (US$4.7 billion). The PM-KUSUM scheme was launched by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in 2019 to support installation of solar pumps in rural areas and reduce dependence on grid. Solarization would reduce dependence of these pumps on conventional electricity thus reducing the requirement of subsidized electricity for agriculture and provide additional source of income to farmers who will be in a position to sell the surplus power to the utility.

The PM KUSUM scheme has three components:

•              10,000 MW of decentralized ground mounted grid-connected renewable power plants (Component-A)

•              Installation of 17.50 lakh standalone solar powered agriculture pumps (Component-B)

•              Solarization of 10 lakh grid-connected solar powered agriculture pumps (Component-C)
